Jaz Joyce - An inspiration to all young women.

Jaz Joyce has stamped her mark on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with her scoring 5 tries in four games for Team GB.

Whilst playing against New Zealand, U.S.A, Kenya and R.O.C, Jaz Joyce was able to invigorate a nation with her blitzing pace and timely runs, scoring points for fun against difficult opposition. She and her teammates are showing great tenacity during their games. The ruthless defense being shown coupled with the masterful counter-attacking are proving to be entertaining rugby for all to watch.

But of those watching the GB 7's, none are more important than the young women who are presumably in awe of her skillset. Jaz, at 5ft6 and 60kg is undoubtedly one of the smaller players at the tournament, making her endeavours even more impressive given the sizeable opposition she has faced. She is able to glide past defenders with ease, using her pace and quick feet to jinx defenders in to a state of frenzy. Dare I say, it's almost like watching the second coming of Shane Williams, who is one of my idols for sure! No pressure, Jaz.

Team GB now face their toughest task of the tournament, playing a strong France side that brushed apart China today in their quarter final. After watching their style of play, there will be 3 key points that GB will have to aim towards:

  • Neutralising the threat that Seraphine Okemba poses in the backs - Her power and deceptively fast footing could prove costly if she gains any forward momentum during the game.

  • Out-running and out-rucking one of the fittest looking teams in the tournament - France in their quarter final game looked as if they were running the Chinese team off of their feet throughout the match. Of course, Team GB are no slouches when it comes to conditioning, but they must work that extra bit harder in the tough, humid Tokyo climate if they aim to reach the second ever Gold-medal match at the Olympics. France look dominant in the ruck situation, allowing them to turn the ball over numerous times leading to multiple tries against a staggered Chinese defense.

  • Maintain their rock-solid defense - During the match against the U.S.A, I was astounded with the defensive effort shown by the women. It was a spectacle to behold that I'm sure they will carry through to the semi final. If they can get that right against a dangerous looking outfit such as France, then their flair in attack will follow naturally.

The Semi-final will be played at 11:30(GMT) on Saturday the 31st July, with the placing matches coming up afterwards.

Pob Lwc i Brydain gyda'r gem, ac yn gobeithio, bydd Jaz yn dod nol i Gymru gyda medal. Yn mwy enwedig, i Dyddewi wrth gwrs!
